So, I don’t know about you, but my seasonal allergies are no joke! Every year, in both the Spring and the Fall, I get a wave of oh so familiar allergy symptoms. In the Spring the oak pollen gives me heat flashes, makes me itchy all over, gives me intense sinus headaches, and worst of all makes me so, so tired, like I didn’t sleep last night tired. In the fall, I get full on upper respiratory problems. Growing up I never had bad allergies and watching my mom suffer year after year, I always thought to myself “Man, I’m really lucky I didn’t inherit her allergies.” However, after I got older, my body changed and I’ve been dealing with horrible seasonal allergies ever since. I’ve tried pretty much every allergy medicine on the market, all of which made little impact on me. I’ve gone to the doctor, just to be put on a different medication, or to be told to move out of Florida.
Tired of being tired, and tired of feeling sick for half of the year, I turned to natural remedies, and let me tell you! I will never turn back. A year after starting these natural remedies, I don’t take allergy medicines anymore, except for the occasional Benadryl before bed when things get really bad. I can honestly say this past Fall and Spring I have felt a million times better than I have in the past. So, what’s the secret? It’s really nothing ground breaking, but it really works for me, so I wanted to share my few tips with you.
Lemon, Lavender, & Peppermint Essential Oils
I mix equal parts lemon, lavender, and peppermint essential oils in a bottle, shake well, and then put 3-5 drops in an empty gelatin capsule. You can also use this mixture topically or diffuse it, however, to really help with allergies, I’ve found ingesting it is the most effective. I also really love this mixture when my throat or head is hurting from allergies. The peppermint is so soothing! I take these once a day as needed. I think it’s important to note, when ingesting oils, the oils you use matter! I use Young Living, because they have a seed to seal promise, and I know there are no toxins or additives in the oils. All Natural Local Honey
If you only pick one remedy to try, I think natural honey is your best bet! This seriously works, but you have to find honey local to your area. The honey I buy is from a store a few miles away that makes their own honey in our neighborhood. I buy unfiltered, raw honey and I take a small teaspoon of it every day during allergy season. Some days this means I eat it right off the spoon, and other days I add it to my morning waffles or in my afternoon tea. It seriously works and it tastes so good!
Other Things I Think Contribute
Although ingesting essential oils and local honey are my remedies during allergy season, I think there’s a few daily routines that contribute to my overall wellness and have made a big impact as far as the severity of my allergies. I take good quality vitamins daily. I take Young Living’s Super Bs (seriously, these are life changers. I can’t and won’t live without them.), vitamin C, and vitamin D. I also take probiotics daily. I use Young Living’s called Life 9. In addition, I eat as healthy as I can on a daily basis, and I try to make sure I’m getting at least eight hours of sleep. It’s just been in the last year that I’ve started taking the daily vitamins and probiotics, and this past year my allergies seem substantially better than prior years.
A Few Additional Tips
Last but not least, during allergy season I try to stay indoors as much as possible. Even though sitting on the patio to work for a few hours in the beginning of March is lovely here in Florida (think blue skies, 70 degrees, and a slight breeze), I know spending more time than necessary outside always leads to me feeling sub par later in the day and leading into the next day. I also make sure to wash my hair every day to wash away any pollen that may have landed in it. This keeps my pillows and blankets free from allergens as well. And I make sure to wash my outer wear, like cardigans, regularly.
